Web3 Identity Overview

What do we mean by Web3 Identity?

Self-sovereign identity (SSI) in the context of Web3 refers to a digital identity model where individuals have full control over their personal data. Unlike traditional models, where personal data is often stored and controlled by third-party entities (like social media platforms, financial institutions, etc.), SSI enables individuals to own, manage, and control their digital identities.

In a self-sovereign identity model:

  • Individuals hold their identity data on their own devices and provide it efficiently to those who need to validate it, without relying on a central repository of identity data.
  • The validity of this data can be confirmed by references to transactions on a blockchain, which are timestamped and immutable.
  • Individuals can decide which pieces of their identity they want to share, with whom, and for how long, thereby enhancing privacy and security.
  • It promotes interoperability, as this data can be used universally, not just within the confines of one system or platform.
