Frequently asked questions
- Develop the protocol (1M people): At this stage, new protocols like Bitcoin and Ethereum were invented, and open-source communities began to experiment with them.
- Build a digital currency exchange (10M people): Coinbase started at this stage. The aim was to create safe and user-friendly exchanges as bridges for people to convert their local currency into and out of digital currency.
- Build a mass market interface for digital currency apps (100M people): This phase moved beyond just exchange and investment. The aim was to develop an easy interface for consumers and businesses to start using digital currency and its applications. Various applications like Coinbase Wallet, Metamask, Rainbow, Trust Wallet, and others were built to let anyone access the nascent cryptoeconomy.
- Build the “dapps” of an open financial system (1B+ people): The final phase involves creating decentralized applications (dapps) for an open financial system. With the interfaces in place, the existing financial system now needs to be recreated on open networks and made globally accessible. There is a focus on enabling countless individuals and institutions to transact with lower fees, more security, and unparalleled access.
You can use the official base bridge.
From the beginning, Coinbase' secret master plan has been clear and consistent: create an open financial system that increases economic freedom globally by moving deliberately through four phases.
The developers of Base believe that they need to go back to the beginning and develop the underlying protocols to enable the end-user applications. They started with Ethereum, driving EIP4844 with Optimism to enable L2 rollups to scale, but they believe that this is not enough.
Base represents a strong commitment to on-chain platforms, which they believe is the most important developer platform since the internet. They assert that the on-chain platform should be open-source, free to use, globally available, and requires collective effort to scale securely, safely, and conveniently.
