The Starknet token will be used for paying transaction fees, participation in the Starknet protocol, and participation in governance.
STARK technology is mature and secure, but Starknet has not yet achieved the status of a public good like Ethereum or the Internet. For Starknet to reach this goal, its governance, operation and development must continue to decentralize. This will be facilitated through two mechanisms: the Starknet Foundation and the Starknet Token.

The principle of Starknet can be illustrated with a sudoku puzzle. It's easier to check the solution to a sudoku puzzle than to solve it from the start. If our objective is to assure people that "this puzzle is solved", we can reduce the computational load by allowing one person to find a solution and then distribute it for others to confirm. In this way, the computation of a solution becomes a singular event that doesn't need to be reproduced by the whole community. Starknet extends Ethereum's capabilities by replacing intensive Layer 1 computations with less demanding (and therefore less expensive) Layer 1 verifications using STARK proofs, which are generated off-chain.
Starknet is a permissionless Validity-Rollup (also called a "ZK-Rollup") that supports universal computation and currently runs as a Layer 2 network on Ethereum. Starknet's long-term Layer 1 security is guaranteed by its use of the most secure and scalable cryptographic proof system – STARK.
